Exploring the region
Within 90 minutes drive of Wellington are the Wairarapa and Kapiti regions each offering an array of rewarding experiences. The attractive early colonial-style towns of Martinborough and Greytown in the Wairarapa region are popular day and overnight destinations for Wellingtonians both offering a fine selection of wine, food and artisan craft and antique shops. Martinborough has around 30 vineyards within walking distance of the main street, most providing on-site tastings and many serving exquisite meals in relaxed surroundings.
The Kapiti region stretches up the west coast north of Wellington and is popular for its beach landscapes, warm microclimate, relaxed lifestyle and breath-taking sunsets. Consider a visit to Kapiti island, one of New Zealand's few easily accessible nature reserves 5km offshore which offers a chance to observe birds rarely, or no longer, seen on the mainland (advance bookings are essential). Car enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Southwards Car Museum, the most comprehensive private car collection in the Southern Hemisphere with over 250 vehicles on display.
